James Angleton CIA chief of Counter Intel, late 1950s. He was one of the original wartime OSS agents. He was trained in Counter Intel by Kim Philby (the Russian spy), at the old M16 office in Ryder street. Philby was posted to Washington as M16 station chief in 1949. (Spycatcher. Peter Wright. James Angleton became the first chief of the CIA's Counter Intel staff 1954. Allen Dulles was DCI from 1953-1961.

Angleton was inducted into the army in New Haven Connecticut on 19 March 1943. He was 25 years old. By Aug 1943 he was offered work with the OSS, America's first foreign Intel agency. The combined efforts of Angleton's father, who had joined OSS earlier and Norman Pearson, his English professor from Yale, then heading OSS Counter Intel in London UK. Cleared the way. James Murphy was head of X-2 the Counter intel part of OSS at the time. After training corporal Angleton was shipped to London UK to handle Italian matters for X-2.

James Angleton joined the CIA in 1947, chief of the CI, Counter Intel division, his mandate was to ensure the CIA was not invaded by the KGB, he monitored CIA relations with other intel agencies. In 1949 he got together with M16 station chief in Washington Kim Philby (the Russian spy). (Espionage. (c)1995 E Volkman).

Italy Oct 1944 -1945. Angleton was transfered to Rome Italy, as an officer of special counter intel unit 2, a detachment of US and UK. In  March 1945 he was posted to first lieutenant and made chief of X-2 for all of Italy at age 27, the youngest X-2 chief in all of OSS. The only American in Italy cleared to share the intel of the Soviet Ultra 1945.
