PHILIPPINES

1521-1946 – An expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan reached the Philippines in 1521. In 1565 the first Spanish settlement by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi on the island of Cebu. In the 1570s Legazpi formed the city of Manila. After 300 years of Spanish occupation Spain gave the Philippines to the US in 1898. On 12 June 1899 Partial independence under US rule. Dec 1941 – Japanese planes attacked the Philippines from bases in Taiwan. (We know now. John Lewis Gaddis ©1997 US).

6 May 1942 – 31 Jan 1945 – On 6 May 1942 American forces on the Philippine island of Corregido surrendered to the Japanese. Thousands of the American servicemen were taken prisoner of war, on 31 Jan 1945, US and Filipino troops were freed, the remaining 50 American prisoners. (Ancestry July August 2007 p28).
